Home EDUCATION Virtual Baby
Family Planning Tasmania's Virtual Baby

FPT has a brand new "Virtual Baby". It is rechargeable computer operated and comes with nappies, a bottle, and a breast feeding device.

The Baby is operated by a wireless ID which is attached to a wristband so that Baby only recognises the parent.

With our new Baby the parent needs to perform all of the following care activities:

  • Feeding
  • Head Support
  • Fussing
  • Nappy Changing
  • Burping
  • Rocking

When the Care Sessions are complete a detailed report will be submitted showing how the parent performed. The following events will be recorded:

  • Proper Care: percent of time the parent cared for Baby properly including rocking, nappy change, burping and feeding.
  • Missed Care: number of times a request for care was missed for more than 2 minutes
  • Mishandled: number of times Baby was handled incorrectly, including wrong position, rough handling, lack of head support and Shaken Baby.
  • Wrong Position: The number of times Baby was held upside down for more than 2 seconds or placed on its tummy for more than 5 seconds while sleeping (Baby sometimes makes breathing sounds during sleep time)
  • Rough Handle: The number of times Baby was roughly handled, including a blow to the body, hitting, dropped or burped aggressively.
  • Head Support: The number of times Baby's head was not supported.
  • Shaken Baby: The number of times Baby was shaken (head moves back and forward and back within 2 seconds)
